The Lemosho route is one of the best ways to climb Kilimanjaro, offering breathtaking panoramic landscapes along the way. Throughout the trek, your Kenrobs Africa guides will share fascinating stories and insights about Tanzania’s nature and wildlife. You’ll enjoy memorable evenings at scenic overnight camps and witness the magic of unforgettable African sunsets.
The Lemosho climb begins at an altitude of 3,400 meters (11,483 feet) on Kilimanjaro’s western slopes. Over the course of the trek, you’ll pass through five distinct climatic zones — from equatorial landscapes and lush rainforests to alpine deserts and the arctic summit. It’s like traveling from the equator to Antarctica in just a few days!
Kenrobs Africa recommends the seven-day Lemosho route for both first-time trekkers and experienced hikers. Technically, the ascent is considered straightforward — no special equipment or mountaineering skills are required to reach the summit. Our statistics show that 98 out of 100 climbers successfully summit via the seven-day Lemosho route, making it one of the most successful routes on Kilimanjaro.
This route holds a special place for us at Kenrobs Africa. It’s along Lemosho that we’ve led remarkable expeditions, including the legendary Wings of Kilimanjaro adventures and trekking teams from Red Bull and National Geographic.
On this day, you will depart from Shira 1 Camp in the morning and enjoy a light trek toward the second high-altitude site — Shira 2 Camp. This stretch of the climb is not demanding, giving you the chance to take in sweeping views of the African savannah and the remarkable flora unique to Kilimanjaro. Shira 2 Camp is one of the best spots on the trek to catch a clear view of Mount Meru — Africa’s fifth-highest peak and Tanzania’s second tallest — weather permitting.
During the hike between camps, our Kenrobs Africa guides will offer the option to ascend Cathedral Peak, standing at 3,872 meters (12,703 feet), one of the highest points of the extinct Shira volcano. The ascent is straightforward with no technical challenges, making it suitable for most trekkers. Besides the rewarding hiking experience, reaching Cathedral Peak offers breathtaking views of the valley below — a scene often compared to a lost world and a personal favorite among our team after years of guiding on Kilimanjaro.
If weather conditions are clear, it’s also a perfect spot for stunning photographs near the summit stela. For those who prefer to skip the Cathedral Peak ascent or encounter poor weather, heading directly to Shira 2 Camp is always an option. Skipping this segment does not affect acclimatization, as Cathedral Peak and Shira 2 Camp sit at similar elevations. Still, we highly recommend this additional hike for both the views and the experience.
Upon arriving at Shira 2 Camp, you will have lunch, followed by a two-hour rest. Later, everyone will take part in an acclimatization hike toward Lava Tower Camp, with an altitude gain of approximately 200 meters (656 feet), supporting your adaptation to the mountain’s conditions.
After breakfast, you will depart from Shira 2 Camp and begin your trek toward a key highlight of the route — Lava Tower. This section of the journey includes a series of ascents and descents, eventually leading to a high-altitude point over 4,600 meters (15,091 feet) above sea level. This part of the trek can be challenging, and it’s completely normal to experience some discomfort as your body adjusts to the altitude. To support proper acclimatization, your group will spend at least 1 to 2 hours at Lava Tower, including a well-deserved lunch at the summit of this impressive formation.
Afterward, you will descend to Barranco Camp, where you’ll be greeted by the striking sight of the famous Barranco Wall — towering in both size and steepness. Though it may appear daunting, there’s no need to worry. The following day, your Kenrobs Africa guides will lead you up a straightforward hiking trail along the wall, designed for trekkers of all experience levels. It’s an exciting section of the climb that’s often a favorite among adventurers.
On this day, your group will make an early start. After a hearty breakfast, you’ll begin the ascent of the famous Barranco Wall. We highly recommend departing camp as early as possible to avoid crowds from other groups, which can slow down your progress. Despite its dramatic appearance, the hike up the gorge wall is not difficult and typically takes about an hour. Once at the top, you’ll have time to rest and take in the incredible views of the majestic Kibo volcano — a perfect opportunity for memorable photos.
From there, you’ll continue with a more challenging trek to Karanga Camp, which includes several ascents and descents along the way. But there’s no need for concern — your Kenrobs Africa guides are experienced in setting the right pace for the group, ensuring your comfort and safety throughout the journey. Upon reaching Karanga Camp, a warm, well-deserved lunch will be waiting for you.
Day 6 –
In the morning, after enjoying a warm and hearty breakfast, you will begin your trek to Barafu Summit Camp. This camp serves as the starting point for your final night’s ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters (19,340 feet) — the ultimate goal of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
The Kenrobs Africa team will set up the camp ahead of your arrival, ensuring that your tents and sleeping bags are ready and waiting. Once you reach Barafu Summit Camp, you can simply relax, rest, and prepare both mentally and physically for the summit attempt ahead.
Day 7 –
Reaching the summit marks both the literal and symbolic peak of your Kilimanjaro journey. On this special night, you will depart from camp and ascend along the edge of the crater rim, steadily making your way to the highest point in Africa — Uhuru Peak — standing proudly at 5,895 meters (19,340 feet). Reaching the summit is a remarkable achievement and a true test of your determination, strength, and endurance.
To ensure your group reaches the summit by sunrise, the trek begins around midnight. During this ascent, a team of specially trained high-altitude porters will accompany your Kenrobs Africa guides to assist climbers along the route. These porters have expressed their dedication to becoming future guides and are expanding their expertise by learning the summit route and understanding the specific needs of climbers.
All members of the high-altitude support team have received additional training, ensuring they are well-prepared to monitor the group’s safety and quickly communicate any concerns to the guides. At Kenrobs Africa, we maintain a 1:1 ratio of climbers to guides or guides-in-training for the final summit push. This guarantees that every climber receives dedicated support from a trained professional as you take on the challenge of reaching Africa’s highest peak.
Day 8 –
Millennium Camp is nestled within a lush tropical rainforest. When you wake here, you’ll feel the relief of descending to a lower altitude and the deep satisfaction of having conquered Kilimanjaro’s summit. After enjoying a warm breakfast, you will begin your final trek toward the national park’s exit at Mweka Gate.
Once you complete the descent, the entire group will gather to celebrate your achievement, followed by an opportunity for you to share your thoughts and experiences in the guestbook. Finally, Kenrobs Africa will present you with your commemorative certificate at our office and arrange a comfortable transfer back to your hotel.
Day 9 –
Take this day to slow down and soak in the true Tanzanian Pole Pole vibe. Whether you want to unwind by the pool with a refreshing cocktail, indulge in a spa treatment, go shopping, or explore one of the charming local gems on a day trip, there’s something for every travel style. Let your Kenrobs Africa travel manager assist you in planning and arranging the perfect day tailored just for you.
Day 10 –
Today, your safari adventure takes you to Tarangire National Park — one of Tanzania’s most captivating wildlife destinations! The Tarangire River winds through the park, attracting giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and buffaloes who come to drink. These prey animals, in turn, draw a healthy population of lions, so you can expect to encounter these majestic predators during your visit.
During the dry season, the Tarangire River becomes the only reliable water source for miles around. As a result, large herds of elephants gather here, making Tarangire home to the largest elephant population in Northern Tanzania for much of the year — particularly between June and October, and again from December to March. Elephants here are unafraid of park visitors and often approach vehicles closely. This behavior is completely safe, as elephants have no natural predators and are naturally curious rather than aggressive.
Day 11 –
Today, you’ll explore the legendary Ngorongoro Crater! Your day begins early when your Kenrobs Africa guide arrives to take you to this iconic part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The crater itself feels like a scene straight out of The Lost World by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle — a vast, ancient volcanic caldera teeming with tens of thousands of wild animals. Although relatively small in size, Ngorongoro boasts the highest density and variety of wildlife per square meter anywhere on Earth. You’re guaranteed to witness incredible animal sightings, often in close proximity to one another.
The descent into the crater takes about 30 minutes by vehicle, passing through lush, scenic forests along the way. Your guide will stop at the famous lookout point, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the entire crater below. Contrary to popular belief, many animals do roam outside the caldera, but most prefer to stay within its safety. The crater provides an abundant supply of fresh grass for grazers and ample hunting opportunities for predators, making it a perfect, self-contained ecosystem where wildlife thrives year-round
Day 12 –
A Kenrobs Africa driver will pick you up from your accommodations and transfer you to the airport. For international flights, please be ready to leave the hotel at least 4 hours before your scheduled departure. For domestic flights, we recommend departing 3 hours prior to take-off.
We wish you a safe and pleasant flight!
Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is renowned for its stunning diversity of landscapes, guiding climbers through everything from lush rainforests to alpine deserts. Kenrobs Africa offers 6- or 7-day itineraries on this route, with the longer option allowing for better acclimatization and a more comfortable ascent.
Pros: Exceptionally scenic with varied terrain; excellent acclimatization on the 7-day itinerary.
Cons: Can be busy during peak seasons; the 6-day option provides less time to acclimatize.
Starting on Kilimanjaro’s western slope, the Lemosho route is celebrated for its breathtaking panoramic views and excellent acclimatization opportunities. Kenrobs Africa offers 6- to 8-day treks on this route, which merges with the Machame path near Lava Tower. The 6- and 7-day itineraries start with a high-elevation drop-off, giving your body an early boost in acclimatization.
Pros: Very high summit success rate thanks to a gradual ascent; crosses the stunning Shira Plateau.
Cons: Can be busy during peak seasons; tends to be more expensive.
Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is the only Kilimanjaro path featuring hut accommodations. Kenrobs Africa offers 5- or 6-day treks along this trail, which begins on the mountain’s eastern slope. The huts provide dormitory-style lodging.
Pros: Comfortable hut accommodations; generally more affordable.
Cons: The same trail is used for both ascent and descent; shorter itineraries may challenge acclimatization.
Approaching Kilimanjaro from the north, the Rongai route offers a drier, less crowded trekking experience. Kenrobs Africa provides 6- or 7-day options on this path, making it an excellent choice for climbs during the rainy season.
Pros: Less rainfall and fewer trekkers; scenic variety including coniferous forests.
Cons: Longer transfer to the trailhead; the 6-day itinerary may offer limited acclimatization time.
The steepest and most direct route up Kilimanjaro, Umbwe is designed for experienced trekkers looking for a challenge. Kenrobs Africa offers 6- or 7-day itineraries on this route, which joins the Machame path two days into the climb.
Pros: Least crowded trail; provides a demanding and rewarding experience.
Cons: Steep initial ascent; the 6-day option is not recommended for beginners.
The longest and newest route on Kilimanjaro, the Northern Circuit offers an 8-day trek that circles the mountain, delivering exceptional acclimatization and unmatched solitude. Kenrobs Africa recommends this route for trekkers seeking a unique and rewarding experience.
Pros: High summit success rate thanks to a gradual ascent; stunning panoramic views with very few crowds.
Cons: Longer duration means higher cost and time commitment; demands strong endurance.
