Mount Meru

The Ultimate Adventure in Tanzania

Mount Meru is a towering volcano, rising to 4,566 meters (14,980 feet) above the vast African savannahs and rainforests. It stands proudly as one of Africa’s highest peaks and Tanzania’s second-highest, located just 40 km from the world-famous Mount Kilimanjaro. While Kilimanjaro often claims the spotlight, Mount Meru offers its own impressive challenge and undeniable charm.

Climbing Mount Meru with Kenrobs Africa is an unforgettable adventure that blends mountain trekking with an authentic immersion in African nature and wildlife. Nestled within a national park, the mountain is home to a diverse range of rare animals and plant life. As you ascend, you’ll pass through lush tropical forests, which gradually transition to heather-covered slopes and unique high-altitude vegetation.

Day 1

Arrival — Kilimanjaro Airport

If you’ve booked a private tour, please note that your package includes airport transfers to be shared collectively by your group members. Additional individual transfers will incur extra charges, so we recommend clarifying your transfer plans with your travel manager in advance. To avoid additional costs, we encourage your group to coordinate arrival and departure times as much as possible. Trust Kenrobs Africa for reliable, comfortable transfers — even in the event of flight delays. We’ve got your journey covered!

Day 2 –

Mount Meru 4-Day Climb

Mount Meru is the second-highest peak in Tanzania, standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet) above sea level. The mountain offers stunning panoramic landscapes and an excellent acclimatization profile. Compared to Kilimanjaro, the slopes of Meru are much quieter, with fewer climbers, allowing for a more peaceful trekking experience. Along the way, it’s common to spot wild animals from a distance, which is why all groups are required to hike with an armed national park ranger for safety.

Climbing Mount Meru with Kenrobs Africa is suitable for both experienced trekkers and beginners. The route is a trekking path that does not require technical mountaineering skills or special equipment. It’s the perfect adventure on its own and also serves as ideal preparation for those planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 3 –

Miriakamba Hut > Saddle Hut

After breakfast, your group will begin the trek to Saddle Huts. As you ascend, the dense rainforest zone will soon give way to heath and moorland landscapes, marked by large trees and unique vegetation. The trail gradually opens up to reveal stunning panoramic views across the mountain.

Once you reach Saddle Huts, those who still have the energy and interest may opt for a short hike to Little Meru Peak, which offers spectacular views and an excellent opportunity to further boost your acclimatization.

Our Kenrobs Africa team will serve a hot lunch and dinner at the camp, ensuring you’re well-rested and prepared for the next stage of your adventure.

Day 4 –

Summit night

This midnight trek marks the final and most rewarding stage of your Mount Meru adventure. You will reach Socialist Peak, standing at 4,565 meters — the second-highest point in all of Tanzania. Many hikers describe summit night on Mount Meru as just as challenging as Kilimanjaro’s, so safety and preparation are essential.

Your Kenrobs Africa guides will be equipped with thermoses of hot tea, first-aid kits, and oxygen cylinders to provide assistance as needed. Throughout the climb, they will conduct regular wellness checks, including monitoring oxygen levels with an oximeter, to ensure everyone’s safety. Should you need a warm drink, a snack for energy, or help carrying your backpack, your guides will be ready to support you.

The summit attempt begins around midnight, following a light snack and hot tea or coffee. Be sure to have your headlamps ready and take a moment to enjoy the breathtaking night sky, filled with stars, as you make your way to the top of Mount Meru.

Day 5 –

Miriakamba Hut > Momella Gate

In the morning, you will enjoy breakfast before beginning your descent back to Momella Gate. On the way down, your Kenrobs Africa team can take you via the scenic Tululusia Waterfalls, offering a perfect opportunity for beautiful photos and a moment to relax by the refreshing cascade.

Once you arrive at Momella Gate, your vehicle will be ready to transfer your group back to the hotel (see details below).

Day 6 –

Rest Day

Take this day to slow down and embrace the true Tanzanian Pole Pole lifestyle. Whether you prefer to relax by the pool with a cocktail, enjoy a rejuvenating spa session, go shopping, or take a day trip to explore one of the area’s hidden gems — there are plenty of options to suit your personal travel style. Your Kenrobs Africa travel manager will be happy to help you plan and arrange the perfect day based on your interests.

Day 7 –

Tarangire National Park

Today, your safari adventure takes you to Tarangire National Park — one of Tanzania’s most captivating wildlife destinations! The Tarangire River flows through the park, attracting giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and buffaloes that come to drink. These gatherings of prey naturally draw predators, which is why Tarangire is known for its healthy lion population — you are very likely to spot them during your visit.

During the dry season, the Tarangire River becomes the only reliable water source for many kilometers, attracting large herds of elephants. In fact, Tarangire is home to the largest population of elephants in Northern Tanzania for most of the year, especially between June and October, and again from December to March. The elephants here are used to visitors and often approach vehicles out of curiosity. This behavior is completely safe — as elephants face no natural predators, they are naturally calm and unafraid of humans.

Day 8 –

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Today, you will explore the legendary Ngorongoro Crater! Your day begins early as your Kenrobs Africa guide arrives to take you on an unforgettable journey to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The Crater often feels like something out of The Lost World by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle — a prehistoric landscape where tens of thousands of wild animals roam freely within the massive caldera left by an ancient volcanic eruption.

Though relatively small in size, the Ngorongoro Crater holds the highest concentration and variety of wildlife per square meter anywhere on Earth. Here, you’re guaranteed to witness an abundance of animals living in remarkably close proximity to one another.

The descent into the crater takes approximately 30 minutes, along a scenic road winding through lush, green forests. Your safari guide will make a stop at the famous lookout point, where you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the entire crater below.

Despite common myths, animals are free to roam beyond the caldera, but the majority prefer to stay within it. With an endless supply of fresh grass for grazers and easy access to prey for predators, the crater forms a self-sustaining ecosystem where wildlife flourishes year-round.

Day 9 –

Serengeti National Park — Seronera

Today, you will visit the most famous safari destination in the world — the Serengeti. As one of Tanzania’s largest national parks, the Serengeti is home to an extraordinary variety of wildlife. During your safari with Kenrobs Africa, you’re sure to encounter lions, antelopes, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, and zebras. With some luck, you may also spot cheetahs, serval cats, and other rare inhabitants of the African savannah.

The Serengeti is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its remarkable ecosystem, high concentration of wildlife, and the world-renowned Great Migration. This landscape also inspired Disney’s The Lion King — but life here is no fairy tale. The Serengeti is raw, wild, and breathtakingly beautiful.

Today’s safari will take you to the heart of the central Serengeti, in the stunning Seronera region, known for its open plains, abundant wildlife, and exceptional game-viewing opportunities.

Day 10 –

Serengeti National Park — Seronera

Your adventure with Kenrobs Africa continues in the heart of the Serengeti — the vast and wildlife-rich Seronera region. Seronera stretches endlessly across the central Serengeti, teeming with life, and it’s impossible to see everything in just one day. That’s why today, your guide will take you to new areas and help you discover even more fascinating wildlife, ensuring you experience the true diversity of this iconic landscape.

The Serengeti is home to some of Africa’s rarest and most elusive species, including rhinos, leopards, serval cats, and caracals. With this second day of exploration, your chances of spotting these remarkable animals in the wild significantly increase.

Day 11 –
