Materuni Waterfalls
Hidden deep in the green foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, Materuni Waterfalls is one of the most picturesque natural attractions in northern Tanzania. Located within a traditional Chagga village, the waterfall plunges about 80 meters from the forested slopes into a clear natural pool, surrounded by ferns, coffee farms, and banana plantations. The area offers visitors not only breathtaking scenery but also an authentic cultural encounter with the Chagga people — the original inhabitants of the mountain’s lower slopes.
A hike to Materuni begins with a scenic walk through lush farmland, where you’ll learn about local life, see farmers tending their coffee and banana crops, and hear birds singing from the treetops. Upon reaching the waterfall, the sound of the rushing water, cool mist, and stunning views create a tranquil and refreshing atmosphere — perfect for relaxation or a refreshing dip. Visitors can also take part in a traditional coffee-making experience, where they roast, grind, and brew organic Arabica coffee by hand, all while enjoying local songs and dances.
